7 tips for maintaining your sweaters and knits

During the winter and during this cold time of the year, we like to wear our best Pako Litto sweaters to face the cold.

And you are probably wondering how to keep your sweater in good condition, how to keep it from pilling or how to prevent your knitwear from shrinking.

Don't panic, we have the solution for you!

Here are our best tips for maintaining or reviving your sweaters and knits.

1. Start with a proper wash

It's best to wash sweaters by hand.
To do this, fill your basin with cold water (maximum 30°) and add a small amount of your detergent.
Soak your sweater in the basin of water and soak it well without twisting it.
Then let it soak for a few minutes more to let the detergent work.
Rinse your sweater several times to remove all the lye from the knit fibers.

If the labels on your sweater do not prohibit machine cleaning, you can put it in the washing machine with a program suitable for wool, a low temperature and few revolutions per minute (400 maximum).

2. Use an adapted detergent

The composition of your detergent will affect the life of your sweater. To keep your sweater in good condition for a long time, it is preferable to use an adapted detergent, special wool and delicate linen. The softener is to be banished because its composition can damage the fibers of the sweater.

3. Dry flat to keep the shape of the sweater

Once the hand washing step is done, press your sweater out of the basin to remove all the water.
You can help yourself to a towel by wrapping your sweater in it and twisting it very slightly. Be careful not to twist it too much so as not to deform it.
Finally, you can lay your sweater flat on a dryer. Ideally, place it on a towel. Do not pinch your sweater with clothespins as this could deform it.

To avoid shrinking or distorting the knit, do not use a dryer to dry it.

4. Use a gentle mode for ironing

Although sweaters don't really need ironing, it's important to know this care tip. Use your iron on a low temperature with a delicate program. Use steam instead of high heat.

5. Space your washes

Sweaters are made of quality materials and there is no need to wash them after every use. Wash them after 2 or 3 uses. Think of your knits and the planet!

6. Fold your sweaters

This tip may seem trivial, but it is important to fold your sweaters carefully and not hang them on a hanger. The weight of the sweater could distort the shoulders and the rest of the garment.

7. Remove pilling from your sweater

It is possible to notice some pilling on your sweaters after many machine washes. But don't panic, it is possible to remove them... by shaving your sweater. Yes, this technique may seem strange but it works. Take a razor that you will use only for your sweaters and pass it gently over the pilled areas to remove them.

Alternatively, you can also use an electric razor specially designed to remove pilling from sweaters or other textiles. Link tuto or pinterest
